Are dado joints difficult to cut?
Are dado joints difficult to cut? I don't really have much woodwork experience (outside of 8th grade shop) and I want to build a built-in bookcase with dado joints. Any tips on how to do this easily? I have a router but i'm not sure exactly how to set up a guide to make a straight cut into the wood. I think that making the cuts so that the shelves line up might be a bit difficult as well.
You can use a router with a top bearing bit. If you can't find one at your local big box store then check out Rockler.com. If you are using plywood for the shelves, you will want a bit that cuts a dado sightly undersized for the 3/4" plywood that is about 1/64th undersized. They will be labeled as such. Most of these bits have a cut depth of 3/8ths or less.
To cut the dadoes, place the sides flat with their edges clamped together so that you can cut the dadoes across both sides at the same time. Lay out the location for the dadoes and clamp a guide along the lay out line. Make shallow passes, increasing the depth of cut no more than 1/8th" each time until you get to the depth you want. Usually 3/8" in 3/4" stock.
If you are making the sides out of plywood, start with a blank the is twice + 1/8" as wide as one side, then after cutting the dadoes, rip the blank in two and the dadoes will match up.
